Terms of Service
Terms of Service
These terms are the agreement between you and us when you use this site to raise money or to give. We have tried to write them in plain words. If something is unclear, please ask us.
1. Who can use the site
You must be at least 18 to create a fundraiser. You sign in with a one-time code sent to your email; there is no password. Keep access to your email safe, because anyone who can read it can sign in as you.
2. Fundraisers and organizers
The person who creates a fundraiser is its organizer. The organizer may raise money for themselves or for someone else (a person, club or organization), the recipient. When the money is for someone else, that person verifies their own payout details with our payment provider; the organizer never handles them.
As an organizer you agree to:
- tell the truth about who you are, why you are raising money, and who will receive it;
- use the money for the purpose you described, and tell donors if that changes;
- have the recipient’s permission when you raise money for someone else;
- not use the site for anything illegal, deceptive or listed as prohibited by our payment provider.
3. Fees
Every fee is shown before anyone pays it. There are no tips and no hidden charges.
- Site fee: 10% of each donation, kept by us.
- Card processing: charged by our payment provider, Stripe, about 2.9% + $0.30 per donation. Donors see an estimate before paying; the organizer’s records show the actual amount.
- Payout fee: $3.00 each time money is sent to the recipient’s bank, including the final payout. This covers Stripe’s charges for sending payouts.
- Dispute fee: $15.00 if a donor’s bank reverses a donation and the dispute is lost (see section 6).
Donors can choose to cover the fees so the recipient receives the full amount. A full breakdown is on the fees page.
4. Donations
Donations are between $5.00 and $10,000.00, in US dollars. Card details go directly to Stripe; we never see or store card numbers. A donor chooses whether their name is shown to everyone, only to the organizer, or to no one. A donor’s email address is never shown to the organizer.
Taxes. Gifts to individuals are generally not tax-deductible. Only registered charities can give receipts for deductible donations, and this site does not issue them.
Refunds. Donations are generally final. If a refund is made, the card processing fee is not returned by Stripe.
5. Holding and paying out money
- Each donation is held for 14 days before it can be withdrawn, to allow for card disputes and fraud checks.
- While a fundraiser is open, the organizer can withdraw money that has finished its hold, at most once every 7 days and at least $25.00 at a time. Each withdrawal must leave enough behind to cover the final payout’s fee. Withdrawals close 3 days before the end date.
- When the fundraiser ends, everything left is paid out automatically, by the plan the organizer chose (one payout after the last hold clears, or two payouts). This happens without a further confirmation.
- Before every withdrawal the organizer confirms a reminder that donations can still be disputed and that disputed amounts may be taken back.
- Who receives the money is chosen while the fundraiser is a draft and is locked once it opens. Only our staff can change it after that, on request. The recipient can update their own bank details with Stripe at any time.
- If a payout fails (for example a closed bank account), the money and the payout fee return to the fundraiser’s balance so it can be sent again once the bank details are fixed.
6. Disputes and chargebacks
If a donor’s bank disputes a donation, that donation is held until the dispute is decided. If the dispute is won, nothing is charged. If it is lost, the donation and the $15.00 dispute fee come out of the fundraiser. If the money was already paid out, the fundraiser’s balance can go below zero; later donations repay it first, and the organizer may owe any amount that remains.
7. Our payment provider
Payments and payouts are handled by Stripe. To receive money, the recipient agrees to Stripe’s Connected Account Agreement during verification. Stripe checks identity and bank details; we do not see them.
8. Content, reports and removal
Anyone can report a fundraiser. Organizers are responsible for what they write. We may hide words from a fundraiser’s web address, pause (“freeze”) a fundraiser while we look into it, or remove it, if it is misleading, harmful, hateful, illegal, or breaks these terms. While a fundraiser is frozen it takes no donations and no money is paid out.
9. Ending a fundraiser
A draft that has never opened can be deleted by its organizer. An open fundraiser’s end date can be moved later, up to a year from its start, but never earlier. Small amounts left after the final payout that cannot cover the payout fee are handled by our staff.
10. Disclaimers and limits
We provide the site to help people raise money. We do not guarantee that a fundraiser will reach its goal, or how an organizer will use the money.
11. Changes to these terms
If we change these terms, we will update this page and the date at the top. For important changes we will tell organizers by email before they take effect.
